    Bealtaine Events 2018

The Association of Irish Choirs in conjunction with the Bealtaine Festival 2018 and Active Retirement Ireland are encouraging choirs and Active Retirement Associations throughout Ireland to participate in the Dawn Chorus.

The Dawn Chorus is a nationwide event developed following an extraordinary debut on the Culdaff beach in Donegal in May 2009. In 2010, the Association of Irish Choirs and Active Retirement Ireland developed a partnership with the Bealtaine Festival designed to bring choirs, active retirement groups and older people together across Ireland to participate in the Dawn Chorus.

The Dawn Chorus is a choral event in which older people come together with a choir in their locality and sing at Dawn in a scenic area, ideally beside water and always outdoors. We are encouraging choirs and active retirement groups throughout Ireland to participate in the Dawn Chorus, by putting on their own local event on any date that works for them.

We sing because we love to sing and for the joy that singing brings to both the singer and the listener. Recent research tells us that singing is good for our mental health, but we in Rockmount Choir, already discovred that 40 years ago. We are singing at the "Metals" on May 6th as part of the Dawn Chorus. Between the hours of 1.00 to 2.00pm.. actual singing from 1-.00 to 1.20pm and 1.40 to 2.00pm. A late dawn chorus you say! Well, yes, it is. Hopefully the sun will be shining and you can get a 99 ice cream and sing along to your hearts content. Let's decide that Summer starts on May 6th with sunshine, song and icecream.

There are three elements to the event. 1) The opening of the new revamped summer community garden in the library grounds with a 'Smashing Times Tea Party'. 2) A performance by Cór Na Laoi, Cork City and County Community Choir to coincide with the celebrations. 3)The opening of a Community Art Exhibition within the library with local community artists depicting their own take on important events that have occurred over the last 100 years which were due in some way to women’s involvement. A number of collaborative pieces representing the groups working with and learning from each other will also be displayed. The goal of this collaboration is to celebrate women’s achievements and to combine a number of community art forms in acknowledging and recognising the contribution of women in communities into the future
