JOURNEY INTO LIGHT - Come and Sing! Join the St. Nicholas Singers

JOURNEY INTO LIGHT - Come and Sing! Join St. Nicholas Singers 28th Jan and 4/5 February 2017. All Welcome.

Come and Sing with the St. Nicholas Singers – This is an all-comers group which prepares its performances over two weekends of intensive rehearsals under the direction of Mark Duley. It is open to all regardless of age or experience, and new members are always welcome.

The project is the first in a new collaboration between St Nicholas Schola Cantorum and the Association of Irish Choirs.

One of the great but often overlooked events in the Christian calendar is that falling on the 2nd February, known variously as Candlemas, the Feast of the Purification, or the Feast of the Presentation. It marks the “official” end of the Christmas season, and recalls the presentation of the infant Jesus in the temple by Mary and Joseph. The variety of names by which it is known indicates something of the richness of this feast, standing betwixt Christmas and Lent, and the wonderful music written for it. The Candlemas image of light is a strong element in this repertoire and gives the forthcoming St Nicholas Singers’ project its title and central theme: Journey into Light.

This project offers singers the chance to sing some lesser-known but fabulous choral repertoire. The works to be sung include settings of the canticle Nunc Dimittis by Eccard and Lukaszewski, Part One of Mendelssohn’s oratorio Christus, and Rutter’s challenging Hymn to the creator of light. As usual, anyone is welcome to participate regardless of experience, and the music will be learnt and rehearsed in two Saturday workshops beforehand. St Nicholas Schola Cantorum director Mark Duley will be rehearsing and conducting the choir.

    Saturday 28th January 13.30-18.30

    Saturday 4th February 10.00-17.00

    Sunday 5th February 14.00-16.00
