Mullingar Choral Society

Mullingar Choral Society has become one of the town's longest established cultural institutions. It is a community-based, non-profit-making choir, currently with membership of approximately 60 singers. The society represents a very positive aspect of Mullingar's artistic energy and prides itself on the consistently high standards of performance which it has achieved over the years.

Mullingar Choral Society was founded as a concert choir in 1968. Its first public performance was the Fauré Requiem conducted by Fr. Frank McNamara in 1969. The choir participated in the Voices of the World concert in Dublin and, in 1997, won the Pilib Ó Laoire Trophy at the Cork International Choral Festival.

In 1999, current Musical Director Fergus O’Carroll was appointed and, under his baton, the choir has presented Handel’s Messiah (for its millennium concert in 2000), Fauré’s Requiem along with Rossini’s Stabat Mater, Verdi Classics, Carmina Burana and Mozart’s Coronation Mass. In 2004, the choir presented the Irish premiere of Otto Ollson’s Requiem and Puccini’s Messa di Gloria. In more recent years, the choir has tackled pieces as varied as highlights from Gilbert and Sullivan’s HMS Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance and The Gondoliers, a selection of Opera classics and choruses, Verdi’s Requiem, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Handel’s Messiah, Puccini's Messa di Gloria, Mozart's Coronation Mass and Solemn Vespers, excerpts from Wallace's Maritana and, in 2012, Orff's Carmina Burana under the baton of then Principal Guest Conductor, Gavin Maloney.

New ground was broken in 2008 with Durufle’s Requiem and Karl Jenkins' The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace, both of which were performed in the Cathedral of Christ the King, Mullingar, and subsequently in the National Concert Hall, Dublin. A return visit to the National Concert Hall took place in October 2008 when the choir was invited to sing with the Dublin Concert Band to mark the band’s Golden Jubilee celebrations.

Mullingar Choral Society continues to grow and develop (and have a fantastic time singing) under our Music Director, Fergus O’Carroll, Deputy Music Director, Fintan Farrelly and Principal Guest Conductor, Thomas Kehoe.

The Lynn Singers is a young female choir from Mullingar Co. Westmeath and is directed by Ms. Dervilla Maloney. The name Lynn (monastic cell or small church) evokes the scared antiquity of a Gaelic Anglo- Norman past and a musical heritage intrinsic to the locality of Mullingar. Since its foundation the choir enjoys performing in community and charity events.

In their short existence, The Lynn Singers have been no strangers to success.

2015- Their first year competing at national and international level, they achieved 1st place at the Feis Ceol and attained second place in the city of Derry International Choral Festival, and  second place the Sligo Choral Festival for female choirs.

2016- They competed with great success against choirs from Ireland and the UK at the City Of Derry International Choral Festival.  They achieved 1st prize in Sacred Music and The National Youth Choir Competition. At the end of the Festival they were awarded National Choir of the Year.

2017.Following their success in Derry, they competed in The Navan Choral Festival achieving  first prize in both the Adult Female Choir section, and the Sacred Music section.

The choir has a wide and varied repertoire and while we like to keep the group relatively small, we are always on the lookout for new members, who are motivated and committed to augment improve, and enjoy the choir.
