Irish Choral Music Centre Stage at World Symposium

The Association of Irish Choirs (AOIC) is currently representing the Irish choral community at the IFCM World Symposium on Choral Music in Barcelona from the 22nd - 26th July 2017. The World Symposium takes place once every three years and is an opportunity for singers, composers, managers, conductors, educators and choral practitioners to come together to celebrate choral music.

The AOIC is supported to attend the event by Failte Ireland. Jimmy O´Byrne (Chairman), Alan Kelly (Vice Chairman) along with Dermot O´Callaghan (CEO) are in Barcelona to represent the organisation and Irish choral music.

AOIC is delighted to be joined by other Irish representatives and particularly congratulates New Dublin Voices, under Conductor Bernie Sherlock, who are the first Irish choir in the history of the World Symposium to be chosen as one of the performing choirs. This is a wonderful achievement for the choir and for the Irish choral community. The works of Irish composers and arrangers are featured in performance at the festival including Mark Armstrong, Eoin Conway, Sean Doherty, Michael McGlynn David Mooney and Conor O´Reilly.

Speaking at the event, Jimmy O´Byrne said:

´At this exciting time for Irish choral music, it’s tremendous that the AOIC is making its presence felt on the world stage. The connections that are being made this week will ensure many years of AOIC´s involvement in the future development of world choral music´

    Dermot O´Callaghan said:

´The World Symposium on Choral Music is one of the largest gatherings of those involved in collective singing from all over the world. It is a privilege to represent Ireland on this international stage in Barcelona and to be joined by colleagues who are representing Irish choral music so well.´

The World Symposium on Choral Music is a one-week event organized every three years, with Regional symposia organized in alternate years. They occur in a prominent and attractive city that has the facilities, financial support and managerial structure to successfully plan and administer a major international or regional event.

A local organizing committee works in collaboration with the Executive Committee of IFCM.?World and Regional Symposia promote artistic excellence, cooperation and exchange, by bringing together the finest choirs and choral leaders for performances, seminars, workshops, exhibitions, and choral reading sessions.

This IFCM WORLD SYMPOSIUM ON CHORAL MUSIC is the magnificent city of Barcelona. Under the theme “The Colors of Peace”, the IFCM World Symposium on Choral Music will bring together choirs from all over the world, choral musicians, composers and publishers to share and celebrate diversity and artistic excellence of our global choral community. The ‘colors’ symbolize the pluralism of international choral life. Various choral structures and sounds, educational models, training and management, conducting and composition techniques will be the essence of concerts, workshops, lectures and roundtables presented during the Symposium. In building a world of ‘peace’, choral music plays a fundamental role encouraging harmony, listening and mutual respect, joining forces and wills with solidarity and the mingling of different cultures.
