A second round of The Arts Council funded Choral Training Bursaries scheme opens today with an 11th May deadline. The aim of the programme is to assist established amateur choirs in accessing high quality training programmes for their singers in the areas of sight-singing, ensemble singing, musicianship and vocal production. The scheme is open to children and youth choirs that operate outside of the formal education system.

Independent, community-based choirs, choral societies or singing groups which are more than one year in existence, are eligible to apply, provided they have a core committed membership and a regular programme of activity. Priority will be given to applicants who were unsuccessful in the past or who did not apply in the first round of applications. Applicant choirs must also have a committee or governance structure and up-to-date public liability insurance. Joint applications from a number of choirs are to be encouraged.

Under the new choral bursaries scheme, outlined above, interested choirs will need to identify and recruit experienced and excellent trainers to undertake this training for them. As the bursary fund manager, AOIC is precluded from giving advice about or recommending people for this training. However, we can provide contact details for expert tutors who live in your area and /or who have made it known to us that they are available and interested in tutoring choirs. Under the terms of the bursaries, choirs are encouraged to engage with expert and highly skilled tutors either from within or out of their own local areas.

Cork International Choral Festival promises to take the city on an inspiring journey of music this...

Cork International Choral Festival promises to take the city on an inspiring journey of music this coming May Bank Holiday weekend, 2nd – 6th May.

Download the festival day by day Event Guide here

Whether it’s sumptuous Gala performances by some of the world’s leading vocal artists, the thrill of top class competition, or relaxing family afternoons, the Festival has something for all ages, tastes and levels of interest - from long time choral fans to those simply looking for a new musical experience. With over 80 events planned for dozens of venues across the city this year it can be difficult to know where to begin!
Crowning the 2012 Festival experience is a stunning line-up of Gala Concerts where you can dress to impress and let some of the world’s leading vocal artists and ensembles entertain, inspire and surprise.

The Festival kicks off to a powerful start with an exhilarating Opening Gala production of Mozart’s final masterpiece Requiem, widely regarded as one of the most enigmatic piece of music ever composed. The Orchestra of St. Cecelia will lead the celebrated Goethe-Institut Choir and some of Ireland’s premier soloists, including Sharon Carty, Eamonn Mulhall, Virginia Kerr, and Philip O’Reilly in a thrilling opening to the 2012 Festival.

On Thursday 3rd May one of the world’s most celebrated vocal ensemble The King’s Singers, take to the Cork Opera House stage as part of their 2012 World tour. With the ensemble’s other Irish date in Dublin nearly sold out, fans should book early to ensure their place at this highly anticipated concert. The National Chamber Choir of Ireland embark on a unique and contemporary musical programme ‘An Irish Colloquy’ in the first of the festivals Cathedral’s Concerts on Friday 4th May. The concert will feature two world premieres, one by commissioned composer Gerald Barry and the second by the winner of this year’s Seán Ó Riada Composition Competition, Frank Corcoran.

Later that evening celebrated Czech ensemble The Gentlemen Singers bring their unique vocal talents to the emotive surroundings of North Cathedral for their ‘Evocations’ Gala. This late-night concert presents a tranquil programme of contemporary classical works by a variety of European composers, from one-voiced compositions (influenced by Gregorian chant) to highly complex eight-voice arrangements.

During the daytime there is a packed schedule to keep you busy, with the Choral Trail being the perfect place for newcomers to start experimenting. Follow the free trail of choirs around the city as they pop up in venues for short, lively performances. At the weekend the trail hits the Clarion Hotel for Afternoons in the Atrium, with choirs singing back to back in a buzzing atmosphere. More free events include The Big Sing, the Festival’s big and bright participatory event, for which no preparation is necessary; and the Church Visits programme which sees top Irish and international choirs sing at weekend services in churches throughout the city.

For those looking to immerse themselves further, the Festival Fringe presents a series of engaging concerts (approx. 50 mins.) showcasing many styles, genres and cultures of music, many of which are free. Starting on Tuesday 1st May with the much loved Shandon Sunrise, concerts will run in city venues from the Masonic Hall to CIT School of Music, to Triskel Christchurch, which will host the immensely popular ‘Choirs at Christchurch’ lunchtime concert series.

Furthermore, the Festival attracts over 70 choirs from the four corners of Ireland to Cork City Hall to compete in a range of national competitions including Chamber, Youth, Light, Jazz and Popular Music, and Church Music competitions. The competitive highlight of the Festival is the prestigious Fleischmann International Trophy Competition, which this year sees twelve top international choirs from as far as The Philippines and Singapore compete for one of the most prestigious prizes in European choral music.
At the fore of choral development in Ireland, the Festival’s education programme presents a range of great opportunities to learn, share and exchange ideas with choral professionals. Since 1998, the annual Composers in the Classroom scheme offers music students and their teachers the opportunity to work in their own classrooms with professional composers throughout the school year, with their year’s work performed as part of the Composers in the Classroom Seminar on Friday 4th in Cork City Hall.
The Festival’s Seminar on New Choral Music continues to bring a fresh perspective and insight into contemporary choral composition and performance, with the help of the National Chamber Choir of Ireland and conductor Paul Hillier. In addition, the Conductors Masterclass gives conductors the opportunity to learn techniques from dynamic Finnish conductor Pasi Hyökki.

The festival weekend is brought to a soaring climax in a vibrant celebration of culture and song in the Closing Gala at Cork City Hall, with festival goers welcome to join the after-party at the Festival Club, Clarion Hotel, which runs into the small hours. With so much to choose from the 86-page Festival Programme is a vital handbook for the weekend and can be purchased from the Everyman Palace Theatre Box Office in Cork. Copies of the Festival’s free Event Guide can also be found throughout the city. The festival’s website www.corkchoral.ie features audio-clips which allow you to listen to each choir directly on the webpage and explore the programme. Bookings can be made through the Box Office of the Everyman Palace Theatre on 021 4501673, or www.everymanpalace.com.

Choral Training Bursaries scheme

Exciting new choral training opportunities for Irish choirs

National Choral Singing Week 2011 (8 -16 October 2011) sees the Arts Council announce a new bursaries programme for choirs from all over Ireland. The new Choral Training Bursaries scheme, which will be managed by the Association of Irish Choirs, is designed to address the training requirements of choral singers outlined in the policy document, Raising Your Voice, which was published by the Arts Council in 2009 after widespread consultation with the choral sector.

This one-off scheme with a 25 November deadline will assist established amateur choirs in accessing high quality training programmes for their singers in the areas of sight-singing, ensemble singing, musicianship and vocal production. Independent, community-based choirs, choral societies or singing groups which are more than one year in existence, are eligible to apply, provided they have a core committed membership and a regular programme of activity. Applicant choirs must also have a committee or governance structure and up-to-date public liability insurance. Joint applications from a number of choirs will be accepted to avail of choral training.

The Association of Irish Choirs (AOIC) is the Arts Council-funded national resource organisation for choirs and choral music. Now based at the University of Limerick, the Association is a national membership organisation of some 500 choirs. Among its activities are the provision of informational, educational and support services to choirs through its website, running seminars, courses, the Annual Choral Conducting Summer School and master-classes. The Association of Irish Choirs is also the parent organisation of the Irish Youth Choir and the newly-formed Irish Youth Chamber Choir.

Speaking about the new Choral Training Bursaries Scheme, Orlaith McBride, Director of the Arts Council, said: “There is an extremely vibrant choral music fraternity in this country and thousands of people nationwide reap the benefits of singing and performing choral music. This once-off scheme is aimed at supporting the training needs identified by the Arts Council in its choral policy report, Raising Your Voice. I am delighted that we are announcing this scheme today and that the Arts Council is collaborating with the Association of Irish Choirs in reaching out to the extensive network of choirs around the country.“

Liz Powell, CEO of AOIC, said: "The choral bursaries scheme is particularly timely given the exponential growth in choral singing in Ireland. It will now be possible for a choir or a number of choirs working together to apply for funding to run training and education programmes, specifically tailored to the needs of their members, wherever they are located in Ireland."

For further information on this scheme and application detail/forms contact: AOIC at 061 234823 or aoic@ul.ie

The closing date for applications is 5pm Friday 25 November 2011.

Download an application form here in Word format

Download guidelines here in Word format

The 82 members of The Irish Youth Choir gathered with RTÉ’s Mary Kennedy and the President of UL, Professor Don Barry on Monday 27 June in the beautiful setting of University of Limerick’s Plassey House to launch the choir’s 2011 season which kicks off in Cork’s Triskel Christchurch on Friday, 1 July.

Launching the season, Mary Kennedy paid tribute to the young choristers and remarked that

“Despite the times we live in, we can have great hope for the future when we look at this gathering of talented young people who have come from all corners of the country and have gone through a rigorous audition process to get to participate in the Irish Youth Choir’s summer 2011 season. Already part way through an incredibly intense and gruelling week of rehearsals, I can sense their enthusiasm and energy in the room today”.

Professor Barry spoke of the great contribution that the Association of Irish Choirs and the Irish Youth Choir had made to the University of Limerick since taking up residence at the University Concert Hall in 2009. He observed that the presence of the Irish Youth Choir on campus during this time further enriches the cultural aspects of the university, adding to the contribution already made by the Irish World Academy of Music & Dance and the Irish Chamber Orchestra, which are also based at UL. He also echoed Mary Kennedy’s remarks on the choristers when he said

“Here we see the leaders of the future; confident, articulate, creative young people working together to create something special”.

IYC will perform at three locations around the country, newly refurbished Triskel Christchurch, Cork on Friday next 1 July, in St Mary’s Church of Ireland Cathedral, Limerick on Saturday, 2 July and St Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin on Sunday 3 July.

The a cappella programme will consist of music spanning 600 years, under the direction of IYC Artistic Director and renowned young choral conductor, Greg Beardsell. Also joining in the great festive fun on the day were the Widow Twanky from this CentreStage’s Aladdin at LIT Millennium Theatre and, of course, Santa!
